Asian Games women’s hockey: India's repeat gold after 44 years
New Delhi, Oct 2 – The Indian women’s hockey team has lifted the gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games, beating China 1-0 in a tightly contested final. This achievement is India's second gold in the tournament, the first being won in the sport’s debut year, 1982, when India triumphed without dropping a single match.
Since that historic win, the Asian Games women’s hockey crown has largely oscillated between South Korea and China. South Korea secured gold in 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998, often dispatching Japan or China in the final. China broke the Korean streak in 2002 and maintained a strong grip with titles in 2006, 2010, and 2022, each time facing South Korea or Japan in the decisive games.
South Korea reclaimed the throne in 2014, while Japan rose to prominence in 2018, defeating India in the final to claim gold. The 2026 edition saw India overturn the pattern, delivering a disciplined performance that kept China at bay and secured a narrow 1-0 win.
China settled for silver, and the bronze medal was awarded to the next best team. India’s back‑to‑back‑era gold medals, spaced 44 years apart, highlight a resurgence and signal a potential shift in the balance of power within Asian women’s field hockey.
