Argentina receives multiple bans and fines following World Cup final incident

The fallout from the World Cup 2026 final has resulted in a series of disciplinary actions against Argentina.

Leandro Paredes was handed a ten‑match suspension and a $90,000 fine for physically confronting a Spanish player. Nahuel Molina, the Argentine defender, was fined $90,000 and suspended for seven matches, while midfield partner Thiago Almada received a one‑match ban and a $30,000 penalty.

Spain’s midfielder Gavi also faced a one‑match suspension, to be served during the Nations League match against England on 26 September.

Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was suspended for three games and fined $30,000. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was ordered to pay $110,000 for various breaches, including the display of a political banner linked to the Falkland Islands after the semi‑final victory over England.

Additionally, FIFA mandated that Argentina's next home fixture be played in a stadium operating at no more than 50 % capacity, imposed a $100,000 fine, and attached a further probationary penalty for any future violations.
