Anshu Malik’s Medal Tally: Asian Gold to World Silver

Anshu Malik’s wrestling résumé reads like a timeline of Indian success on the mat. Born on 5 August 2001 in Nidani, a village in Haryana’s Jind district, she was immersed in wrestling culture from day one thanks to her father Dharmveer’s stint with the junior national team in the 1990s. Though her mother envisioned a medical career for her daughter, the family soon recognized Anshu’s passion and placed her at Chaudhary Bharat Singh Memorial School for specialized training.

The athlete’s early breakthrough came at the 2016 Asian Cadet Championship, where she clinched gold. Two years later she stood on the podium at the World Cadet and Junior Championships, taking bronze, and followed it up with an Asian Junior gold in 2019. In 2020, she added a silver from the Matteo Pellicon Ranking Series and a bronze at the Asian Championships, which secured her a berth at the Tokyo Olympics after finishing second in the qualifiers.

An injury curtailed her Olympic debut, ending her campaign in the round of 16 against Belarusian Irina Kurachkina. Undeterred, Anshu struck back in 2021 with a silver medal at the World Wrestling Championships. The following year, she represented India at the Commonwealth Games, winning silver, and was decorated with the Arjuna Award for her outstanding contribution to sport.

Anshu’s second Olympic appearance came in 2024, where she faced American Helen Maroulis in the pre‑quarterfinals, a bout that ended in defeat but solidified her status as a consistent world‑class competitor. To date, she holds three Asian Championship medals, a world silver, Commonwealth silver, and multiple junior honours, making her a role model for aspiring wrestlers across the nation.
