Anfield Gears Up for First City‑Liverpool League Clash Since 2015

Liverpool will host Manchester City at Anfield next Sunday, marking the first Premier League meeting between the two clubs since March 2015. Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, called the fixture a "significant examination" as the Reds look to build on the momentum built before the international break.

The Dutch defender explained that after a longer than normal pause between games, the team is hungry for a high‑stakes encounter against the league leaders. He expects a roaring Anfield atmosphere and believes that maintaining the improvements shown earlier in the season will be essential.

Liverpool’s recent win over Burnley was highlighted for its solid defensive organization, collective effort and unwavering resolve. Van Dijk emphasized that the side must now focus on delivering consistent performances to improve their league position.

Manchester City sit atop the Premier League table, having won each of their first five matches – a feat no other club has matched this season. Liverpool sit seventh with nine points from five games, comprising two wins and three draws, and both of their home league fixtures so far have ended in stalemates. A victory would help the Reds break that pattern.

Van Dijk praised City’s depth, noting the quality present across the pitch. He added that to achieve a favourable result, Liverpool must give their best, treat the match as a privilege and display unity and commitment in front of their supporters.

The upcoming game will also be notable for the absence of both Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who last managed their respective sides in a Premier League clash in March 2015. City’s striker Erling Haaland has already scored five league goals, while Liverpool’s forward Alexander Isak is close behind with four.
