Anderson Set to Depart Lancashire After Quarter-Century

New Delhi, October 25: After a quarter-century with Lancashire, James Anderson is set to depart the club. The former England fast bowler has been informed that his contract will not be renewed beyond the 2026 season.

Anderson has responded with visible disappointment. In a social media message, he suggested that the ending would have been different had he been able to decide. He noted that he had grown up supporting Lancashire, which made playing for them for 25 years feel like living a childhood dream.

He also spoke warmly about Old Trafford, describing it as a ground that has always meant a great deal to him. Anderson recalled many fond memories there, including his time as captain. He concluded by wishing the team and its supporters success in the years ahead.

Lancashire's new cricket director Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon delivered the news at a meeting last Monday. They told Anderson that the club would not offer him a new deal, as it intends to refresh its first-team squad.

Anderson had expected to continue for another season. His form this year was strong, with 50 wickets at an average of 17.68. He was also named the club's Championship Player of the Year.

Farbrace confirmed the decision and praised Anderson's contribution. He called Anderson the greatest bowler Lancashire and England have produced and highlighted his exceptional skill and commitment in every dressing room he had been part of. Farbrace said the club would always be proud to have had him represent it for so many years.

The club has also set out its ambitions. Lancashire hopes to earn promotion from Division Two of the County Championship and to challenge for Division One within the next three to four years. Farbrace said the rebuilding process would begin immediately, covering both the players and the wider professional cricket structure.

Anderson's England career had ended in 2024 without his consent, after head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes decided he was not part of their plans. He remains England's leading wicket-taker in Test cricket and the most successful fast bowler in the format, with 704 wickets in 188 matches.

He debuted for Lancashire in 2001 and was picked for England the following year. In 112 first-class matches for the county, he has taken 443 wickets. He has also claimed 83 wickets in 61 List A games and 50 wickets in 40 T20 matches for the club.
