Anahat Singh Advances to Canada Open Quarterfinals
India's Anahat Singh has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Women's Open after defeating England's Saran Nghiem in Toronto on Tuesday. The win marks another strong result for the 18-year-old as she builds momentum on the PSA tour.
In the second round of the PSA Silver-level event, which has a prize purse of US$103,750, Anahat overcame world No. 52 Nghiem 11-6, 4-11, 11-5, 11-7. The sixth seed had received a first-round bye and entered the tournament at this stage.
Anahat, the world No. 15, began the match with a strong opening game. Nghiem leveled the contest by taking the second game, but Anahat regained control in the third and finished the match in the fourth.
The victory builds on her recent performance at the Silicon Valley Open, a PSA Gold-level tournament in the United States. There she reached the semifinals for the first time at that level, before losing in four games to Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam.
As the current World Junior Champion, Anahat faces a stiff test next in the quarterfinals against Egypt's Ferowz Aboelkheir. The world No. 7 is the top seed in Toronto, and the match is expected to be a demanding one for the Indian player.
Elsewhere in Toronto, India's Veer Chotrani exited the men's draw of the PSA Silver-level Canada Cup. He lost 7-11, 7-11, 6-11 to England's Mohammed Alshorbagy in the second round, against the world No. 36.
