Akib Nabi replaces injured Bumrah for upcoming Sri Lanka Test matches

Jasprit Bumrah’s left‑knee injury has ruled him out of the two‑Test series against Sri Lanka, the BCCI confirmed on its X account. The fast bowler could not achieve the required recovery ahead of the August fixtures.

The vacancy is filled by Jammu & Kashmir’s rising star Akib Nabi, who earns his first senior Test invitation. Nabi was instrumental in J&K’s Ranji Trophy triumph, claiming 60 wickets this season and accumulating 104 wickets over the past two editions. He also featured for India A in Sri Lanka, grabbing six wickets in two games.

With 162 wickets in 43 first‑class matches at an average of 18 and 16 five‑wicket hauls, Nabi’s credentials are compelling. In the limited‑overs arena he has taken 56 wickets from 36 List‑A outings at a 27‑run average. The call‑up reflects sustained domestic form and growing demand for his inclusion.

The opening Test commences on 15 August at the Galle International Stadium, followed by a second encounter in Colombo on 23 August. Ahead of the series, a three‑day warm‑up against a Sri Lanka XI will be played from 7 August.

Bumrah’s sidelining is considered a major setback, yet Nabi’s debut offers India a fresh fast‑bowling option as they head into the sub‑continental tour.
