Afghanistan Loses ODI Leader; Shahidi Ends Captaincy Stint

KABUL – The Afghanistan cricket federation confirmed that Hassmatullah Shahidi has relinquished his role as ODI captain effective immediately. Shahidi, who assumed the captaincy in 2022, oversaw the team’s participation in the Asia Cup, the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, accumulating 27 matches under his leadership.

His tenure featured memorable victories against high‑ranking sides such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and the Netherlands in the World Cup, where Afghanistan finished in sixth place and earned qualification for the Champions Trophy. Shahidi also led series wins over Bangladesh (3‑0), Zimbabwe (2‑0) and a one‑off win versus South Africa.

Statistically, Shahidi maintained a batting average of 33 in ODIs with a strike‑rate of 70, and his only international century was a 102‑run innings against India (131 balls).
