Afghanistan Beat Zimbabwe by 19 Runs as Omarzai Shines in Sharjah
Sharjah: A thrilling performance from Azmatullah Omarzai powered Afghanistan to a 19-run victory over Zimbabwe on Thursday. The win gave Afghanistan both the match and the series. Omarzai's innings is now being discussed as one of the finest T20 performances from a number six batter.
Afghanistan were struggling at 4 wickets down for only 5 runs when Omarzai walked in. He took control of the innings and guided the team to a competitive total, turning a difficult start into a position of strength.
Omarzai's 116 off 50 balls featured five fours and twelve sixes. Afghanistan were bowled out for a total of 221 for 7 in 20 overs. Ejaz Ahmadzai provided excellent support with 52 runs from 27 balls. The two added 142 runs in 59 balls for the sixth wicket.
The innings also set a historic benchmark. Omarzai became the first full member player to score a T20 International century while batting at number six or lower, surpassing England's Sam Billings, whose 87 against the West Indies in 2019 at Warner Park had been the previous high.
His twelve sixes made another record. He is the first full member player to hit ten or more sixes in a T20 International innings from number six or lower. The earlier mark of eight sixes was shared by Kieron Pollard, Dasun Shanaka and Tristan Stubbs.
Zimbabwe's reply was led by captain Sikandar Raza, who remained unbeaten on 106 off 56 balls. Despite his effort, Zimbabwe finished on 202 for 5 in 20 overs and lost the match by 19 runs.
