Afghan Batting Flourish Leads to 402/7 After Zimbabwe's 504 Declared

The opening Test between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe unfolded at Sharjah Cricket Stadium with Zimbabwe opting to bat first. Inocent Kaia and Ben Kareng laid a foundation of 60 runs, after which Kaia was dismissed for 34. Brent Taylor and Kareng added 65 runs before Taylor partnered with captain Brian Bennett for a further 137 runs, moving the scoreboard to 262/2.

A swift wicket tumble followed, yet the middle order steadied the innings. Bennett, together with Wesly Madhavere, compiled a 96‑run partnership for the sixth wicket, taking the total to a formidable 504 before the last wicket fell. Bennett’s 128 featured 11 fours, Madhavere contributed 54, while Tafadzwa Tsiga made 44 and Graham Kramer remained unbeaten on 34. Zimbabwe’s bowlers Mohammad Salim and Kays Ahmed each claimed three wickets, with Jiya ur Rahman Akbar picking up two.

Afghanistan’s pace attack made early inroads; Numan Nyamahuri removed four batsmen for 62 runs, and Graham Kramer added two wickets to the tally.

Afghanistan’s reply began with a collapse to 14/1 after Abdul Malik’s dismissal. Sedikullah Atal and Rahmanullah then orchestrated a 206‑run partnership, rescuing the side from early trouble. Atal’s 105 came off 213 deliveries, including three sixes and six fours before he was run out. Captain Rahmat Shah then took charge, adding 31 runs with Rahmanullah and another 24 with Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Afghanistan lost their fifth wicket at 275, but Shah’s subsequent stands with Ikram Alikhil (40) and Kays Ahmed (27) nudged the total close to 400. The day concluded with Afghanistan at 402 for 7, Shah unbeaten on 94 and having struck nine boundaries.
