In a significant boost to India’s winter sports ecosystem, the 10th National Snowshoe Championship commenced in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday. Over 178 competitors representing 20 states are vying for top honors in this marquee event, signaling the growing popularity of snowshoeing nationwide.
The championship was officially launched by Syed Qamar Sajjad, Director of Tourism Kashmir, who waved the green flag to mark the start. Nestled in the Himalayas, Sonamarg’s pristine snowfields have become synonymous with elite winter competitions.
Sajjad emphasized the multifaceted benefits of hosting such events. They propel adventure tourism, empower budding athletes with competitive exposure, and stimulate the local economy. ‘Jammu and Kashmir is etching its name on the national and international tourism map through initiatives like these,’ he noted.
The venue buzzed with energy as sports officials, administrators, coaches, and fans turned up in force. Participants raved about the resort’s stunning landscapes and challenging snowy tracks, deeming it unmatched for snow sports.
Anticipation runs high for increased winter tourism footfall and broader engagement in adventure activities across the region. The recent opening of the Sonamarg Tunnel has revolutionized access. Inaugurated by PM Modi on January 13, 2025, this 6.5 km engineering feat links Gagangeer and Sonamarg, featuring two lanes and bypassing hazardous avalanche zones.
Previously, the old G-shaped route would shut down during snowstorms, isolating the resort. Now, the tunnel guarantees seamless connectivity in all weather, traversable in a mere 15 minutes. As winter festivities unfold, Sonamarg stands ready to host unforgettable sporting moments.
