Speaking at the FII PRIORITY Summit in Miami, Trump voiced strong opposition to the funding allocated under the previous administration. He suggested that the funds were intended to interfere in India’s election process.“Why do we need to spend $21 million on voter turnout in India? I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected. We have got to tell the Indian government… Because when we hear that Russia spent about two thousand dollars in our country, it was a big deal. They took some internet ads for two thousand dollars. This is a total breakthrough,” he said. While maintaining his respect for India and its Prime Minister, Trump questioned the necessity of spending millions on voter turnout in a foreign country, adding, “I have a lot of respect for India. I have a lot of respect for the prime minister. He just left, as you know, two days ago. But we’re giving USD 21 million for voter turnout. It’s voter turnout in India. What about, like, voter turnout here? Oh, we’ve done that, I guess. We did USD 500 million, didn’t we? It’s called the lockboxes.”

His remarks have sparked significant debate, with critics questioning whether US foreign aid should be used to influence democratic processes abroad.

DOGE Scraps Controversial USAID FundOn February 16, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a body tasked with scrutinising government expenditure, revealed that $21 million had been allocated under USAID for increasing voter turnout in India. The disclosure, made by the department’s head, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, caused a stir in political circles.Following the revelation, DOGE scrapped the funding. Trump defended the move, saying, “Why are we giving $21 million to India? They have a lot more money. They are one of the highest taxing countries in the world in terms of us; we can hardly get in there because their tariffs are so high.”His comments underscored his broader stance on reducing unnecessary foreign spending, particularly in nations with strong economies.Political Uproar In IndiaThe revelation led to reactions from Indian political figures. Sanjeev Sanyal, an economic adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called the funding “the biggest scam in human history” and demanded to know who benefited from it.

The timing of the funding disclosure has fuelled suspicions, as India’s 2024 general elections saw Modi’s BJP securing a third term, albeit with a reduced majority. Exit polls had predicted a sweeping victory for the party, but the final results painted a different picture, with the BJP needing NDA allies to form the government.

Opposition leaders in India have questioned whether foreign funds had any role in the election. However, the Modi government has dismissed concerns, insisting that India’s democratic process remains independent.

US-India Relations Under ScrutinyTrump’s remarks add another layer of complexity to US-India ties, which have already seen tensions over trade policies. While he praised Modi and India, he pointed out that the country’s high tariffs remain a challenge.

“India is one of the highest taxing countries in the world in terms of us; we can hardly get in there because their tariffs are so high,” Trump said. His comments reflect long-standing trade disputes between the two nations.

As the US heads into its own election cycle, Trump’s criticism of international spending is likely to become a key talking point in his campaign. Meanwhile, India will have to address growing concerns about foreign influence in its electoral process.

The debate over the $21 million voter turnout fund is far from over, with both countries facing pressing questions about transparency, sovereignty, and the role of international aid in democratic elections.
