Guwahati: Assam Assembly on Monday witnessed acrimonious scenes as Deputy Speaker Numal Momin alleged that he was attacked by Congress MLA Nurul Huda outside his chamber.

All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLAs came to the assembly with bamboo made barricades as a sign of protection. They alleged MLAs need protection following the aggressive posture shown by ruling MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi on Friday.

AIUDF was protesting ruling BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who verbally abused opposition MLAs and tried to physically attack them inside the House last week. The Congress legislators attended the Assam Assembly wearing black dresses to protest Kurmi’s act. Before the assembly session started the Congress legislators held a sit-in protest outside the Speaker’s chamber in the Assembly building demanding action against Kurmi.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I got a WhatsApp from Momin that he was attacked by Nurul Huda, and he is now hospitalised. I request the Speaker to file a police case as it happened outside the House and then police will investigate it.”

Momim made a statement in the assembly where he stated that he was injured when Huda pulled him. “There is an injury in one of my hands. I request the Speaker to investigate it.”Speaker Biswajit Daimary said he has asked the officials to probe the same. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia demanded a House Committee to investigate the matter instead of giving a police case as it was reported to take place inside the Assembly building.Opposition MLAs including Congress, AIUDF and CPI(M) rushed to the house protesting Kurmi’s act and ruling party’s statement regarding the alleged attack on Momin.

Treasury bench to launch a counter attack and there was milee. “This will set a bad precedent that an indigenous tribal has been attacked inside the Assembly complex. This is going to be a big issue,” the CM said. The House adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

Ruling BJP in Assam had on Saturday asked its MLA from Rupjyoti Kurmi to publicly apologize for his aggressive behaviour in the state assembly on Friday.

Kurmi was engaged in a bitter war of words with Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi.

Sarma said that he had discussion with Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia and Saikia has asked Kurmi to apologize to the people of the state for his conduct in assembly does not conform to the culture of BJP.

The incident took place on March 21, 2025, when Kurmi, representing the Mariani constituency, left his seat and charged towards Akhil Gogoi. He was angry because Gogoi interrupted him while he was speaking. He even used harsh language to an AIUDF MLA outside the house.

Saikia in the letter to Kurmi, expressing his disappointment and labeling the conduct as contrary to the traditions of the Assembly.

In the letter, Saikia stated, “Your act of leaving your seat and rushing towards a fellow legislator has drawn the attention of the people of Assam. Your conduct is contrary to the traditions of the Assembly.”

The letter emphasized the party’s core values of discipline, restraint, and ideological integrity, asserting that such behavior undermines the BJP’s ethos of patience and principled debate.

Kurmi in 2021 left congress and joined BJP.
