The recent inclusion of Vaishnavi Sharma in India’s T20 International squad against Sri Lanka marks a significant recognition of her exceptional domestic cricket performances. Head coach Amol Muzumdar highlighted that the selection committee, led by Amita Sharma, made this choice based on her consistent displays at the domestic level.
Sharma has made a strong impression in her nascent T20I career. Following her debut in the series opener, where she bowled economically, she impressed with a 2-32 in the second T20I. Her journey from the Under-19 World Cup winning team, where she was the leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps, to the senior squad underscores her burgeoning talent.
Coach Muzumdar emphasized that her successful transition from the U-19 level and her impactful domestic performances were key factors. “Domestic performance was rewarded by the selectors. So real credit to them,” he stated. Sharma’s wicket-taking prowess is further evidenced by her 21 wickets in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy and topping the charts with 12 dismissals in five matches at the Senior Women’s Inter Zonal T20s.
Despite going unsold in the WPL 2026 auction, Sharma has showcased remarkable composure and skill against Sri Lanka. “The control that she has shown, not just in her skills but also in her mental control, is out there. She’s calm, collective. As I said, she looks promising,” added Muzumdar.
With the T20 World Cup looming in mid-2026, the Indian team management is focused on building a stable squad. “We try to be as settled as possible,” Muzumdar explained, noting their awareness of the upcoming tournament and the need to identify areas for improvement in the T20 side.
While acknowledging the need for improvement in fielding, Muzumdar assured that the team is working on enhancing all aspects of the game – batting, bowling, fielding, and fitness. “We are constantly trying to improve day by day in all facets of the game,” he affirmed.
The recent ODI World Cup victory has brought a positive aura to the team, and Muzumdar observed a noticeable increase in the players’ happiness and energy on the field. “They seem to be happier on the ground as well. It’s a good thing to be in,” he remarked. The coach also expressed respect for the Sri Lankan team, viewing them as a strong opponent and a worthy challenge.
