President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, attributing the swift resolution to a return to an earlier treaty. He lauded the leaders of both nations for their ‘brilliance’ in reaching a ‘rapid and very fair conclusion,’ emphasizing the United States’ pivotal role in facilitating peace. Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, ‘I am pleased to announce that the breakout fighting between Thailand and Cambodia will stop momentarily, and they will go back to living in PEACE, as per our recently agreed to original Treaty.’ He further claimed that the U.S. has become the ‘REAL United Nations’ by settling eight conflicts in the past eleven months, sharply criticizing the UN’s perceived ineffectiveness, particularly regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement on Saturday, ending weeks of intense fighting over a contentious border dispute. The accord mandates an immediate cessation of military actions, a freeze on troop movements, and the safe return of displaced civilians to their homes. This recent outbreak of violence, which began in July and had a previous Trump-brokered ceasefire fail, reportedly resulted in over 40 deaths and displaced nearly a million residents. Both nations have exchanged accusations regarding the instigation of violence and harm to civilians, with Cambodia alleging temple damage and Thailand citing troop movements near historical sites.
