Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of Ambani brothers- Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani-to withdraw the Z Plus security cover . He also endorsed the Bombay High Court’s remark that high-level security should be given to those who are at risk of life and who are willing to pay for the security. The petitioner had demanded withdrawal of security from the Ambani brothers saying that they were able to arrange their own security at their own expense.
The Bombay High Court said, ‘It is the responsibility of the state to ensure the rule of law. It also includes providing protection to citizens whose lives are at risk. The revenue of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has a major impact on India’s GDP. The danger to the lives of these people cannot be taken lightly. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing in court on behalf of the Ambani brothers, said that both the industrialist brothers and their family are in danger. He said, “We are paying for the security provided by the government.” On this, the court questioned whether every person who feels the risk of life and who is willing to bear the cost of security, should provide security from the government? The court said, “It is our opinion that if anyone is able to make private individual payments, then the government should provide security to them.” The court said that the government should continue to review the threat and security of someone.
