Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump will meet on the sidelines of the G-7 summit-level meeting in Paris on August 26.
PM Narendra Modi has been invited to the G-7 Summit as a guest by French President Emmanuel Macron.
This meeting comes after US President Donald Trump’s remarks on Tuesday wherein he said that he would be taking up the issue of Kashmir with PM Narendra Modi and reiterated his offer to mediate.
“PM Khan [Imran Khan] was here just recently and I am going to be with PM Modi over the weekend in France. So, I think we are helping the situation but, as you know, there are tremendous problems between those two countries. I will do the best I can to mediate,” said Donald Trump.
According to sources, while there would be discussions on reducing tensions in Kashmir, the two leaders will also discuss the wider ambit of the relations between the two nations.
India has always maintained that abrogation of provisions within Article 370 is an “internal” and the dispute over Kashmir is a “bilateral” issue and will have to be resolved mutually with the bilateral accords between India and Pakistan.
Earlier in the week, the Narendra Modi and Donald Trump had a 30-minute phone conversation that covered bilateral and regional matters. Both sides discussed important issues related to trade, Afghanistan and terrorism.
“In the context of the regional situation, the Prime Minister stated that extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region [Pakistan] was not conducive to peace. He [Narendra Modi] highlighted the importance of creating an environment free from terror, violence and eschewing cross-border terrorism without exception”, read a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement.
