The defending champions of the Women’s Premier League, Mumbai Indians (MI), have announced a significant addition to their coaching staff for the upcoming 2026 season. Kristen Beams, a former Australian leg-spinner, has been appointed as the team’s spin bowling coach. This move signals MI’s commitment to strengthening their bowling attack for another successful campaign.
Beams expressed her excitement about joining the MI family, noting the team’s established winning culture and tight-knit environment. “It’s an incredible opportunity to work with someone like Jhulan Goswami, one of the greats of the game, and somebody I played cricket against,” she stated in a video shared by the franchise. She highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and the team’s strong bond as key factors she’s eager to contribute to.
Beams brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She was a prominent figure in Australia’s international cricket, notably being the third-highest wicket-taker in the 2017 Women’s ODI World Cup. Her playing career included one Test, 30 ODIs, and 18 T20Is, alongside extensive experience in the WBBL. Transitioning from playing to coaching, Beams has a strong track record.
Her coaching credentials include leading the Hobart Hurricanes to a WBBL title, as well as coaching stints in The Hundred. She also served as the head coach for the Australia women’s U19 team and held development roles at Cricket Australia. Beams will work alongside head coach Lisa Keightley, bowling mentor Jhulan Goswami, batting coach Devieka Palshikaar, and fielding coach Nicole Bolton, creating a formidable coaching unit.
The WPL 2026 season is scheduled to take place from January 9 to February 5, with matches held in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. Mumbai Indians, captained by India’s Harmanpreet Kaur, will begin their title defense against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 9 at the DY Patil Stadium.
