Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with Ethiopia’s highest national award, ‘The Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia,’ in Addis Ababa. This prestigious accolade marks a historic moment, recognizing his significant contributions to fortifying the India-Ethiopia partnership and his esteemed global statesmanship. PM Modi is notably the first head of state or government globally to receive this esteemed honor.
During a special ceremony, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali presented the award, commending Modi for his exceptional role in strengthening bilateral ties and his visionary leadership. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted these contributions in a statement. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep gratitude for the honor, embracing it with humility. He dedicated the award to all individuals, both Indian and Ethiopian, who have cultivated the strong relationship between the two nations over time. He also conveyed thanks on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion citizens. The conferment signifies a pivotal milestone in the robust partnership and the advancement of the Global South’s agenda.
Following the award ceremony, Prime Minister Modi engaged in productive discussions with his Ethiopian counterpart. Both leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership. Key areas for expanded cooperation include trade, investment, innovation, technology, education, defense, health, food security, agriculture, renewable energy, and digital public infrastructure. They acknowledged the historical bonds and strong people-to-people connections between the two countries and exchanged views on regional and international developments. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, covering UN Peacekeeping Operations Training, mutual administrative assistance in customs, and the establishment of a data center at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all aimed at benefiting citizens through enhanced services and trade.
