In a significant development for India’s defense manufacturing capabilities, Lockheed Martin has proposed establishing a C-130J Super Hercules production line within the country. This marks the first time the American aerospace giant has committed to building a full production facility for this renowned aircraft outside of the United States. The announcement, made on December 9th, follows closely on the heels of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, during which bilateral defense cooperation was a key topic of discussion.
Lockheed Martin views India as an ideal location for this groundbreaking overseas production hub. The proposal comes as the Indian Air Force (IAF) is in the process of acquiring 80 new tactical lift transport aircraft. The company asserts that the C-130J perfectly aligns with the IAF’s requirements, citing its proven track record as a reliable transport platform utilized by over 20 nations, including India itself. The IAF currently operates a fleet of 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
Robert Toth, Lockheed Martin Vice President, highlighted the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program as a crucial opportunity for the company to “grow its capability in India and build a stronger base here.” He further emphasized that India is the first country globally where Lockheed Martin has committed to setting up a co-production facility outside its home country, demonstrating a significant strategic investment. To compete for the MTA tender, Lockheed Martin has partnered with Tata Advanced Systems, responding to the IAF’s request for information issued in 2022 to replace its aging An-32 and Il-76 fleets. The MTA project is expected to receive formal approval in the coming weeks. Other global players like Embraer with its KC-390 Millennium and Airbus with the A400M are also vying for this substantial contract. The C-130J Super Hercules is a globally recognized military transport aircraft, with over 560 units delivered to 28 operators in 23 countries.
