India has issued a stern travel advisory for its citizens heading to China, urging them to exercise extreme caution. This advisory follows a distressing incident where a woman from Arunachal Pradesh was reportedly detained at Shanghai airport for over 18 hours. New Delhi is actively seeking firm assurances from Beijing that Indian nationals will not face harassment, undue scrutiny, or arbitrary detention at Chinese airports. The government emphasized that international travel norms must be respected, especially concerning the validity of Indian passports. The detained traveler, who resides in the UK, was on her way to Japan for a holiday and alleged she was mocked during questioning and even advised to apply for a Chinese passport. This situation is particularly concerning as direct flights between India and China have only recently resumed after a prolonged hiatus, and efforts are underway to stabilize bilateral relations following border standoffs. India maintains its position that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the nation and rejects any claims to the contrary. The Ministry of External Affairs has formally protested the incident, highlighting that China’s actions may contravene international aviation conventions. This marks a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at ensuring the safety and dignity of Indian citizens abroad.
