In a significant breakthrough, the Jagannathpur police in West Singhbhum have apprehended a cunning cybercriminal, rescuing a young woman from blackmail and mental distress. The case came to light when the victim filed a formal complaint detailing how Md. Shamsher Ali alias Md. Shamsher Alam (39), a resident of Aurangabad, Bihar, befriended her under the pretense of marriage. Following this, he leveraged compromising photos to extort money from her. The accused initially gained her trust by promising marriage, but later reneged on the commitment, citing dowry as an excuse. Subsequently, his brother, Nisar Ali, arranged his marriage to another woman in Bihar. Despite the broken engagement, the perpetrator maintained contact with the victim. During this period, he created objectionable content, which he then threatened to widely circulate on social media. To have these images removed, he demanded a sum of 5 lakh rupees from the victim and her family, plunging her into severe mental anguish. A special investigation team, operating on technical intelligence, successfully traced and arrested the accused in the Baturi village of Kasma police station area, Aurangabad district, on December 8, 2025. A smartphone recovered from his possession contained the victim’s compromising images, which have been seized along with other digital evidence.
