An intense anti-Naxal operation in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district has resulted in the elimination of at least 18 Maoists, including a prominent commander. The fierce encounter, which spanned the forests along the Bijapur-Dantewada border, saw security forces successfully neutralize a significant number of insurgents. The operation initially reported 12 fatalities, with an additional six bodies recovered, confirming the high casualty count among the Naxalites. Crucially, the security forces also seized a substantial haul of weapons and ammunition, including sought-after AK-47 and INSAS rifles. Among the neutralized insurgents was Modiyam Vella, a key commander of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), known for his involvement in several deadly attacks. Vella, who carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh, was implicated in the 2020 Minpa ambush that claimed the lives of 17 security personnel. While the operation achieved a major success, it came at a tragic cost. Three brave personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) in Bijapur were martyred during the exchange of fire. Two other DRG personnel sustained injuries and are receiving medical attention. This year alone, Chhattisgarh has witnessed the neutralization of 275 Naxalites, with the Bastar region being the most affected. The ongoing fight against Naxalism continues, with security forces remaining vigilant in their efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
