Authorities in Bangladesh have apprehended an individual linked to the assassination of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The arrested man, identified as Himon Rahman Shikdar, a Jubo League activist from the Adabar Thana area, was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon. Police apprehended Shikdar at a local hotel following intelligence gathering, suspecting him and his accomplices of orchestrating disruptive activities. During the arrest, law enforcement seized a foreign-made pistol, live ammunition, gunpowder, crackers, and other potentially dangerous materials, indicating a serious threat.
The killing of the 32-year-old Sharif Osman Hadi has ignited widespread unrest across Bangladesh. Hadi, a prominent figure and founder of Inqilab Moncho, was critically injured after being shot in the head while campaigning for the recent parliamentary elections. He later passed away from his injuries in Singapore on December 18th. Hadi was a significant voice in protests against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. His death has led to considerable public outcry and protests, with some alleging the interim government’s failure to ensure his safety. Concerns have also been raised about the potential flight of his killers, with claims they may have escaped to India, prompting calls for swift action.
Meanwhile, India has officially requested a comprehensive investigation into Hadi’s death. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed its rejection of what it termed a ‘false narrative’ being propagated by extremist elements in Bangladesh following the murder. India has also noted the lack of a thorough investigation by the interim government and the absence of significant evidence shared regarding the events.
