BHOPAL:  Eyeing the 21% tribal vote, the opposition Congress has appointed senior tribal leader and former union minister Kantilal Bhuria of its election campaign committee in assembly polls-bound Madhya Pradesh.

The 73-year-old Bhil tribe leader (Bhil tribe is the largest tribe in the state) who was a minister in the erstwhile Manmohan Singh government at the centre, will head the 34-strong election management committee of the party in the state, where assembly polls are slated in November, an official statement of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) said on Tuesday.

The committee also includes all senior and prominent leaders, including two former CMs Kamal Nath (state party chief) and Digvijaya Singh, leader of opposition Dr Govind Singh, former state party chiefs Arun Yadav and Suresh Pachauri  and lone Lok Sabha member Nakul Nath (who is Kamal Nath’s son) among others.

“The appointment of Kantilal Bhuria (who is also ex-state Congress chief) as the chairman of the campaign committee, is a clear cut message of tribal empowerment,” a senior Congress leader said.
