Yogi administration revives Sant Ravidas title for Bhadohi, aims to balance Dalit and Rajbhar sentiments
In a decisive cabinet session on Friday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government approved the renaming of Bhadohi district to Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. The vote came after Finance Minister Suresh Khanna presented the proposal, citing the saint’s contribution to Indian religious and social reform as the primary justification.
The district’s name has oscillated over the past three decades: originally christened Sant Ravidas Nagar in 1997, it was stripped of the saint’s title in 2014 during the Samajwadi Party’s tenure, reverting to a plain Bhadohi designation. The latest decree restores the historic name while retaining the regional identifier, thereby creating a compound title that respects both Dalit and Rajbhar cultural claims.
Legal compliance was emphasized, with the cabinet referencing the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, 2006 (Clause 6(2)), and a 1953 central government circular that authorize state‑level renamings. The formal notification is expected shortly.
Political commentators interpret the move as a strategic outreach to the Dalit electorate, for whom Guru Ravidas stands as an emblem of social justice. At the same time, preserving "Bhadohi" in the new name appeases the Rajbhar community, which links its lineage to the traditional Bhadohi region.
The dual‑name strategy underscores the Yogi government’s broader aim to craft a narrative of inclusive development, blending reverence for historic saints with acknowledgment of regional identities. As Uttar Pradesh prepares for the next electoral cycle, such symbolic gestures are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping voter perceptions.
