How Yoga Improves Kidney Function – Nine Essential Asanas Explained
Kidneys filter toxins, balance electrolytes and regulate fluid levels, making them indispensable for a thriving body. While diet and exercise are foundational, yoga offers a complementary approach to renal care. According to the Morarji Desai National Yoga Institute, nine specific postures can enhance kidney efficiency.
Surya Namaskar, a full‑body sequence of twelve positions, accelerates blood circulation and directs oxygen‑rich flow toward the kidneys, sharpening their cleansing ability. Uttanpadasana, performed supine with both legs lifted, activates core muscles and eases pressure on the kidneys.
In Trikonasana, the body forms a triangle, energising the kidneys and adrenal glands and reducing adipose tissue around the renal area. Setu Bandhasana creates a gentle upward lift of the pelvis, encouraging smoother blood movement through the kidneys and helping to control hypertension, a leading factor in kidney disease.
The remaining poses—Katichakrasana (standing torso twists), Dhanurasana (bow pose), Vakrasana (seated spinal twist), Bhujangasana (cobra pose) and Ardha Matsyendrasana (half lord of the fishes pose)—all involve spinal rotation or back‑bending. These actions massage the abdominal organs, boost renal circulation, aid in stone prevention, and support the body's natural detox pathways. Practising these nine asanas regularly can sustain kidney health and improve overall metabolic function.
