As International Women’s Day approaches on March 8, cinephiles in New Delhi have a treat in store. The Austrian Cultural Forum and Embassy are organizing a exclusive screening of Sandeep Kumar’s ‘Mehrunisa’, a tribute to the indomitable Farrukh Jafar. This Indo-Austrian production highlights a woman’s bold stride from Lucknow’s elite circles into Bollywood stardom.
Collaborating with six Austrian honorary consulates in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, the screenings will occur at venues provided by local women’s groups. This multi-country initiative underscores the film’s universal appeal.
‘ Mehrunisa’ chronicles the life of Farrukh Jafar, who at 85 led this female-centric narrative. From the opulent havelis of Lucknow, she pursued her passion for acting on her own terms, inspiring generations. The film’s Lucknow locations add authenticity, with supporting performances by Tulika Banerjee and Ankit Dikshit.
Farrukh’s career highlights include her breakout in ‘Umrao Jaan’ opposite Rekha, followed by memorable roles in ‘Swades’, ‘Peepli Live’, ‘Gulabo Sitabo’—where she played Amitabh Bachchan’s spirited wife—and others like ‘Ammi Ki Boli’ and ‘Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa’. Her passing in October 2021 marked the end of an era, but ‘Mehrunisa’ ensures her story lives on.
Having debuted at global film festivals in 2021, this Women’s Day revival invites reflection on breaking barriers, urging women to chase dreams fearlessly.
