Women police strength quadruples in Uttar Pradesh since 2017

Data released by the Uttar Pradesh government shows a dramatic rise in the number of female police officers. In 2017, the state employed about 10,000 women in its law‑enforcement agencies. Today that figure stands at close to 45,000, and officials anticipate it will exceed 50,000 after the next recruitment cycle.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath linked this growth to improved safety outcomes for women, stating that a larger female presence in the police force fosters trust and faster response in gender‑sensitive cases. The administration also highlighted that the expanded cadre works alongside modern safety tools such as the AI‑based Safe City network, dedicated mission‑strength centers, and emergency helplines.

The CM underscored that the increased representation not only bolsters protection but also creates new career opportunities for women, aligning with the broader agenda of economic empowerment and self‑reliance.
