Why Chandika Dhura Temple Is a Must‑Visit for Pilgrims and Nature Lovers

The Chandika Dhura Temple, perched about ten kilometres from Pithoragarh, combines devotional fervour with pristine mountain scenery. Dedicated to the fierce form of Goddess Mahakali, the shrine is celebrated for embodying justice, strength, and protective energies. Pilgrims flock here for the Navratri fairs held in Chaitra and Sharad months, where traditional chants, offerings, and cultural programs take place.

Travel experts recommend visiting between October and March, as winter and early spring provide clear skies and safe mountain roads. During the monsoon, the surrounding slopes are prone to landslides, making travel hazardous. The temple’s hallmark is an ancient stone sanctuary, a hidden kund inside the garbhagriha, and a quiet ambience that invites contemplation.

Local legend says the idol originated from Chandika Ghat on the banks of the Ramganga River and was carried up to the high peak—‘Dhura’—in the 15th century. The cave‑like location earned the deity the nickname ‘Udiyaar Devi.’
