Who Will Contest Oct 6 By‑elections in Maduranthakam and Dharapuram?

The October 6 by‑elections in Maduranthakam and Dharapuram have drawn intense attention from Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has officially nominated I. Paranthamen, a seasoned party spokesperson and former Egmore MLA, for Maduranthakam. In Dharapuram, the party has introduced fresh face S. Suganya as its candidate.

The ruling TVK government and its ally AIADMK have yet to disclose their contenders. Two former AIADMK legislators – K. Maragatham Kumaravel (Maduranthakam) and P. Sathebhama (Dharapuram) – resigned and joined the TVK, creating a potential pool of candidates for the ruling side.

The election commission’s timetable sets the polling date for October 6 and the counting for October 9. Nominations began on September 9 and will close on September 16. Maduranthakam’s voter roll lists 2,11,295 electors, split almost evenly between men (1,03,943) and women (1,07,288), with 64 registered as third gender.

These contests are part of a broader set of seven vacant assembly seats across Tamil Nadu, and the results will be closely watched as an early indicator of the opposition’s recovery after its recent defeat.
