What Are the Five Pranas? Color, Location and Role Explained
Yoga and Ayurvedic literature speak of the body as a subtle energy field where five distinct life‑forces, called pranas, continuously circulate. Each prana possesses a characteristic colour, a primary anatomical zone and a set of tasks that influence bodily functions.
**Prana Vayu** – bright like fresh blood, located around the chest and heart, moves inward and is responsible for breathing, intake of external energy and activation of the mind and senses.
**Apana Vayu** – dark as a ground‑dwelling insect, found in the lower abdomen and pelvic region, flows downward and manages elimination of waste, urinary and reproductive activities.
**Samana Vayu** – white like milk, centred on the navel and mid‑abdomen, works horizontally to digest food, absorb nutrients and preserve internal balance.
**Udana Vayu** – pale white, rises to the throat and head, controls speech, self‑expression, enthusiasm, growth and the upward thrust of mental processes.
**Vyana Vayu** – likened to fire, spreads through the whole body, distributes blood, nutrients and neural signals, and synchronises the actions of all organ systems.
