West Bengal Chief Minister Announces Vidya Bharati’s 1,000 School Initiative

West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared an ambitious target to open at least one thousand schools across the state within the next twelve months. The schools will be operated by Vidya Bharati, the educational arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

The announcement aims to address perceived shortcomings in the public education system by introducing institutions that incorporate cultural and value‑based learning. Officials said the initiative would be rolled out swiftly, with infrastructure support from state agencies.

However, the plan encountered immediate criticism from opposition leader Sanjay Raut, who questioned the RSS's capacity to supply qualified teachers and maintain academic standards. Raut argued that the responsibility for schooling, including curriculum and staffing, rests with the central and state governments.

Raut also brought up a conversation with Rahul Gandhi, in which Gandhi supposedly warned about potential health hazards for activists who might be detained, suggesting that jail food and water could be compromised.

The development has ignited a wider political discussion about the role of non‑governmental organizations in education, the adequacy of existing public schools, and the potential impact of introducing an alternative syllabus in West Bengal.
