Weather Department Warns of Thunderstorms Across Multiple Districts
The Chhattisgarh weather department has issued an orange alert for seven districts—Kabirdham, Bemetara, Rajnandgaon, Durg, Raipur, Balod and Kanker—citing the risk of heavy rain accompanied by frequent lightning. The alert follows a night of intense precipitation that began on Saturday, delivering roughly 30 mm of rain in Raipur within just thirty minutes. The sudden downpour caused water to spill over into homes in villages like Tati Bandh and created significant puddling on the streets of affluent neighborhoods.
In parallel, a yellow alert covers a broader group of districts, including Balrampur, Korea, Surajpur, and others, indicating moderate rainfall and the possibility of thunderstorms. The layered warning system reflects the department’s assessment of varying severity across the state.
Maximum temperatures have dipped across the region, with Bilaspur at 28 °C, Durg at 30.6 °C, Jagdalpur at 26.4 °C, and Raipur registering 28.5 °C—about 4.6 °C below the typical summer high. The cooler readings are directly linked to the sustained cloud cover and precipitation.
Data from the last 24 hours show that Sarangrha recorded the highest rainfall at 140 mm, while Saraypali and Badhe Baceli each logged near‑100 mm. Despite these localized bursts, the monsoon’s overall contribution to the state’s water budget remains about 46 % below average.
The department’s forecast for the next day predicts light to moderate rain throughout most of Chhattisgarh, with isolated pockets of heavy showers. Agricultural activities continue, with farmers advancing rice nursery preparation despite the wet conditions. Meteorologists suggest that July may bring intensified rainfall, potentially compensating for the current deficit.
