WB Government Accelerates Citizenship Process under CAA
In a recent briefing, Minister Dilip Ghosh explained the state's renewed focus on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) after a period of stagnation. The CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, including Hindus, Sikhs and other vulnerable groups.
Ghosh noted that the process was stalled for years, leaving many eligible applicants without relief. Following the recent political shift, the government has re‑opened applications and started issuing Citizenship Certificate (C) documents, as demonstrated by the recent distribution to 300 individuals.
The minister underscored that the initiative seeks to address historic grievances and ensure that victims of religious persecution receive legal protection and a pathway to Indian citizenship.
