Warrior Pose Guide: Correct Alignment and Safety Tips
New Delhi, October 25: Yoga is a valuable practice for maintaining physical health and mental calm. Regular sessions can enhance flexibility, build muscle strength and support better body balance.
Virabhadrasana, also called the Warrior Pose, is among the widely practised yoga postures. It supports leg strength, improves stability and helps keep the shoulders active. Because the pose involves several body parts at once, correct alignment is essential. Incorrect form can place extra strain on the knees, shoulders and lower back.
One common error is allowing the arms to go limp or raising the shoulders toward the ears. Both habits can distort posture. Practitioners should keep the arms strong and extended parallel to the floor, while the shoulders remain relaxed and away from the ears.
Knee placement is another key factor. Letting the bent front knee move past the ankle or fall inward can overload the joint. The front knee should align directly above the ankle to ensure safety.
Leaning the upper body forward is not advisable either. Keeping the spine upright helps maintain the correct form. Putting all of the weight on the front or back leg is also a mistake. Both feet should be grounded firmly, and the body's weight should stay balanced. The back leg should not be raised from the mat but kept steady in its position.
To practise the pose, first stand upright on a mat. Place the feet at a suitable distance, turn one foot outward and keep the other slightly inward. Lift both arms to shoulder height so that they run parallel to the ground.
Bend the front knee while making sure it stays above the ankle. Keep the back leg extended and press the sole and outer edge of the back foot firmly onto the mat. Open the chest, keep the shoulders down and attempt to keep the hips even. Distribute weight evenly across both legs and look ahead.
Remain in the position for as long as you can comfortably manage. Slowly return to the standing position and then repeat the same steps on the other side.
