Wangchuk Sets Condition for Ending Hunger Strike on Government Accountability in Schools

New Delhi, July 20 – Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has linked the cessation of his hunger strike to a concrete promise from legislators. In a Sunday post on X, he wrote that he will end his fast on July 20 if MPs across party lines assure him that the monsoon session will raise the issue of accountability and reforms in the education sector.

He posed the question, “When will I break my fast…?” and explained that the decision depends on the government taking responsibility for recent education failures, including paper leaks, or on the Congress and BJP leadership guaranteeing parliamentary discussion of the matter.

Wangchuk also noted that if his health makes it impossible to stop the strike, he expects political leaders to visit Safdarjung Hospital to provide the promised commitment in person.

According to the activist, the statement was written on July 19 while he was under what he describes as “illegal detention” at Safdarjung Hospital, restricting his freedom of movement, speech, and interaction.

His wife, Geetanjali J. Angmo, earlier declared that the fast would only end after MPs and party leaders meet Wangchuk at the hospital and pledge to highlight education accountability and reform during the monsoon session.
