Voter List Overhaul: Eligibility Date Set for Jan 1 2027 and Final Roll Release on Jan 4

A fresh schedule for the Special Short Revision (SSR) of voter lists was announced by the Election Commission of India on 15 October. The key eligibility date for the upcoming electoral roll is 1 January 2027, with the definitive list to be published on 4 January 2027.

The SSR will see the rationalisation of polling stations and their re‑organisation completed by 2 November. An integrated draft voter list will then be released on 12 November, followed by a claims‑and‑objections period that closes on 28 December. All pending issues will be resolved before the final roll goes live.

The programme applies to those states and union territories that are not currently undergoing a Special Intensive Revision (SIR). For the 17 regions where SIR is in progress or has just concluded – including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura and Telangana – a separate SSR timetable will be communicated later.

The ECI also confirmed that Aadhaar numbers are optional for voters. Applicants may voluntarily submit their Aadhaar in Form‑6 or Form‑8, but a missing Aadhaar will not cause a registration request to be rejected nor an existing entry to be removed.

The notice, addressed to chief electoral officers across 17 states and UTs, also highlighted the commission’s earlier directive on 29 September 2026 to run a special campaign for missed voters, youth voters and first‑time electors, and to accept advance applications for three additional eligibility dates – 1 April, 1 July and 1 October 2027.
