Vizag Port Set to Become Major Transshipment Hub after Largest Private Foreign Deal

The $1.4 billion investment by MSC’s Terminal Investment Ltd marks a watershed moment for Vizag Port, positioning it as a premier trans‑shipment hub across the Indian Ocean. The port, which began operations in December 2024 as India’s first deep‑draft mega‑transshipment facility, currently handles 1.6 million TEUs.

With the new equity partnership, Vizag expects to triple its capacity to 5.7 million TEUs by the end of 2028, leveraging its strategic location only ten nautical miles from the main east‑west shipping lane that links Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East.

In the fiscal year 2025‑26, Vizag managed 1.3 million TEUs and serviced 615 vessels, already surpassing the 1 million TEU benchmark in its inaugural year. The MSC tie‑up is projected to attract more cargo from Southeast Asia, increase relay cargo volumes, and deepen the port’s connectivity to emerging markets.

The agreement will be completed once all statutory permissions are obtained.
