Villupuram district sees internal turmoil as AIADMK seeks to restore order
The AIADMK’s Villupuram district unit has been rocked by a serious internal dispute that intensified after the July 9 meeting of party workers. A heated argument between C.V. Shanmugam’s faction and supporters of the newly appointed district secretary Pasupathi turned violent, with stone‑throwing and a brief road blockage.
In the aftermath, the party’s top brass, led by General Secretary Appadi K. Palaniswamy, removed eleven members identified with Shanmugam from their organizational positions. The action aims to quell the factionalism that has lingered since the state’s assembly elections, where the party fell to third place.
Party officials emphasized that restoring discipline is essential for rebuilding the organization’s strength ahead of future electoral battles. Although the move signals a tough stance, observers note that similar factional tensions persist in other regions of Tamil Nadu.
No further disciplinary steps have been announced, and Shanmugam’s supporters have remained silent on the expulsions.
