The violent confrontation on March 3 in Argundi village resulted in severe injuries to Assistant Sub-Inspector Mantu Agarwal, spotlighting the perils of cracking down on bootlegging networks.
Acting on tips about a hidden distillery in a roadside house, the department dispatched a small team to Argundi. Upon entering the targeted home, they were met with unexpected aggression. One occupant slashed at the officers, inflicting critical wounds on Agarwal’s neck and back with a lethal blade.
The attack triggered an uproar. Officers fought to extricate themselves as villagers poured in, wielding bows, arrows, and local arms. Outnumbered and under threat, the team pulled back strategically.
Medical teams at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital worked swiftly on Agarwal, reporting stable vitals. Commissioner Niranjan Tiwari rushed to the scene for a firsthand assessment. Police from Muffasil thana arrived promptly, led by Vinod Kumar, initiating a thorough inquiry. Sources indicate one individual linked to the assault is in custody, with more detentions expected.
