How Vikram Sarabhai Shaped India’s Nuclear and Space Sectors

Vikram Sarabhai’s career bridged two critical pillars of India’s technological advancement: nuclear energy and space exploration. After the untimely death of Homi J. Bhabha in 1966, Sarabhai assumed the chairmanship of the Atomic Energy Commission, steering the nation’s nuclear programme toward peaceful applications such as power generation and medical isotopes.

Simultaneously, Sarabhai’s advocacy for a dedicated space agency led to the creation of the Indian National Committee for Space Research in 1962, later renamed ISRO. Under his guidance, the organization embarked on satellite development, remote sensing, and launch vehicle research, laying the foundation for India’s current status as a major space power.

His dual stewardship ensured that scientific research was aligned with national development goals, fostering collaborations between universities, research labs, and industry. Sarabhai’s strategic vision earned him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and the Padma Bhushan, reflecting his impact on both nuclear and space domains.
