Vijay Orders 3% DA Hike for Tamil Nadu Staff, Pensioners

Chennai, October 31: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has directed a three percentage point hike in dearness allowance for state government employees and teachers, a decision announced just before Diwali. Pensioners and family pensioners will also gain from the revision.

The allowance has moved up from 60 percent to 63 percent. The new rate will apply with retrospective effect from July 1, 2026.

The state government's notification indicates that around 16 lakh employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners stand to benefit from the change.

The revision will add Rs 1,858 crore to the state's annual expenditure. The government has said it will provide the additional money required to implement the change, underlining its commitment to both serving and retired personnel.

The move comes after the Centre increased the DA for central government staff from 60 percent to 63 percent, effective July 1. Tamil Nadu has adopted the identical revised rate and start date for its employees and teachers.

The notification also turned attention to the contribution of government officials and teachers in welfare planning and implementation. It noted that their efforts have been instrumental in making public welfare programmes work on the ground.

According to the notification, the administration is rolling out multiple initiatives for public benefit. Government staff and teachers are key participants in both designing these programmes and carrying them out.

Having considered these responsibilities and the need to prioritise staff welfare, the Chief Minister reviewed the revision after the Centre's announcement and ordered a corresponding increase for state employees.

The order explicitly lists pensioners and family pensioners as beneficiaries. The government said the financial commitment covers all four groups mentioned in the announcement.

As Diwali approaches, the government said the hike would help beneficiaries celebrate the festival more happily. The measure sits within a broader festive-season focus on the welfare of employees, teachers and pensioner families.

While the revised allowance takes effect from July, the notification does not state when the arrears will be paid. It does, however, confirm the effective date, the revised rate, the estimated number of beneficiaries and the recurring annual cost to the state.
