Veteran officer Sandeep Jain takes charge as Vice Chief amid army modernisation drive

On July 1, 2024, Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain assumed the role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff, joining the apex of Indian military leadership in a ceremony held in New Delhi. The senior officer’s appointment is part of a broader restructuring aimed at bolstering the Indian Army’s operational edge.

Commissioned into the Mahar Regiment in June 1988, Jain’s four‑decade‑long service record reflects a wide spectrum of command and staff responsibilities. A National Defence Academy alumnus, he has commanded troops in semi‑desert environments, led an infantry brigade belonging to the Strike Corps, and headed anti‑terrorist units tasked with internal security.

His international exposure is substantial. He served as a United Nations military observer in Ethiopia and later commanded a sector of the UN mission in South Sudan. Earlier, he participated in the 1987‑1990 Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, gaining valuable insights into counter‑insurgency operations.

Domestically, Lieutenant General Jain has operated along India’s most volatile borders – the Line of Control, the north‑eastern insurgency front, and high‑altitude Himalayan sectors – where he oversaw multiple deployments under challenging climatic conditions.

Prior to his elevation, he was the Chief of Staff of the Southern Command and, before that, the General Officer Commanding‑In‑Chief of the Southern Command, positions in which he drove force restructuring, capability upgrades and readiness initiatives.

He holds a Higher Command Course credential from the Army War College and has completed a national defence curriculum in Kenya. For his exemplary service, he has been honoured with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Sena Medal.

His appointment arrives at a critical juncture as the Indian Army intensifies its modernisation programme, embraces cutting‑edge technology and refines theatre‑command structures. Defence analysts anticipate that Jain’s broad operational background will accelerate reforms and enhance the army’s combat readiness for future challenges.
