Vedic Rituals and Divine Bath: Dev Snan Purnima at ISKCON Bhubaneswar

The ISKCON temple in Bhubaneswar observed Dev Snan Purnima on 29 June, offering a vivid display of Vedic rites and community devotion. The schedule began with a Mangala Aarti at 4:30 a.m., followed by the ceremonial alankaran of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and the Sudarshana Chakra. At 7 a.m., the Shringar Aarti concluded the initial worship phase.

Priests then prepared the deities for the sacred bath, changing their garments and arranging the ritual space. The ‘pahandi’ method was employed at 10 a.m., placing the deities on a dedicated snan vedi for immersion. The Mahabhiṣeka commenced shortly after, using water from 108 consecrated kalash blended with dairy products, honey, and ghee, reflecting the Shodashopachara sequence of offerings.

Post‑bathing, the deities were robed in the distinguished Gaja Vesh, an elephant‑like costume that underscores Lord Jagannath’s majesty. The audience responded with heightened reverence, witnessing the rare attire for the first time in recent years. Subsequently, a series of 56 bhogs—each a distinct culinary offering—were presented, culminating in a final Aarti and opening of the sanctum for darshan.

The evening featured a sustained program of bhajan‑kirtan and sankirtan that lasted until 11 p.m., drawing large numbers of singers and listeners. After the day's rituals, the deities will be moved to the Anasar Ghar for a fifteen‑day period of post‑snan care, during which only fruit offerings are made, following age‑old scriptural guidance.

Organizers emphasized that the celebration aligns with the historic Snan‑Yatra practices of Jagannath Puri, thereby reinforcing cultural continuity and spiritual solidarity among devotees across Odisha.
