Vande Mataram Bill receives TMC MP’s endorsement
Trinamool Congress MP Saugat Roy, speaking on July 18, expressed strong approval for the forthcoming Vande Mataram Bill. He argued that India’s national song, like its anthem, should be protected by law to prevent any disrespect or misuse. Roy highlighted that existing statutes safeguard the national anthem, and a similar framework is essential for the song that unites the nation.
Roy also touched upon recent events involving activist Sonam Wangchuk, describing the relocation of the protester from the hunger‑strike site to a hospital as unfortunate. He maintained that Wangchuk’s demand for the education minister’s resignation is justified and should be considered.
The MP outlined the party’s intensive preparations for the Shaheed Day program scheduled for July 21, noting that coordinated meetings have ensured smooth execution and that large numbers of participants from across West Bengal are anticipated.
In response to the central government’s “National Honour Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2026,” Roy voiced support, citing the need to protect Vande Mataram’s esteem after recent controversies. He also criticized Home Minister Amit Shah’s West Bengal tour, claiming limited information about its objectives and alleging that BJP cadres have been involved in disruptive activities.
Meanwhile, fellow TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh condemned the central government’s handling of the Wangchuk protest, labeling it an attack on democratic freedoms and promising to keep raising people’s concerns in Parliament.
