Uttarakhand Pilgrimage Sites Face Scrutiny After Theft Claims
A fresh controversy has erupted in Uttarakhand after a temple worker at the Badrinath shrine was allegedly apprehended stealing sacred offerings. Sandeep Khatri, the founder of Bhairav Sena, described the episode as a serious breach of trust that parallels recent disturbances at other religious landmarks.
The Sena’s core committee convened promptly and prepared a formal communication to the head of the Badrinath‑Kedarnath Temple Committee, demanding that the accused employee be placed on immediate suspension and that a thorough departmental inquiry be launched.
Khatri linked the incident to wider concerns about the state’s handling of religious institutions. He argued that the abolition of the Department of Religious Affairs in favor of a tourism‑centric model has weakened safeguards for pilgrims, leading to a series of infractions that jeopardise faith.
The leader warned that Bhairav Sena is prepared to organise a large‑scale protest if such violations persist, with a scheduled action slated for July 23.
He also addressed the misuse of donations, stating that devotees expect their contributions to support temple restoration, religious functions, and improved infrastructure. Any misappropriation, he asserted, is a grave violation that must be corrected.
Khatri called upon Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene, emphasizing the need for decisive action against the culprits and any officials whose negligence may have facilitated the wrongdoing, thereby restoring confidence among worshippers.
