Uttar Pradesh’s Transport Department is taking decisive action against illegal parking to enhance road safety and prevent mishaps on busy highways. As part of the Road Safety Month observed from January 1 to 31, a comprehensive statewide drive is underway, focusing on expressways, NH, SH, and key arterial roads.
Key to this effort is the demarcation of 117 holding areas, providing designated parking spots to eliminate roadside breakdowns that endanger motorists. Transport Commissioner Kinjal Singh highlighted how vehicles parked illegally on shoulders create invisible hazards for speeding traffic, often resulting in tragic pile-ups. Enforcement squads have clear orders: vacate roads, relocate vehicles to safe zones, and penalize repeat offenders.
Data from the first 27 days reveals the scale of the operation—4,949 vehicles checked, 3,488 fined for parking and other infractions, 55 seized immediately, and 1,847 removed via cranes. This not only clears congestion but also saves lives.
Complementing enforcement, the department is bolstering awareness campaigns. Training sessions for NCC, Scouts, and community youth aim to foster a culture of compliance. Singh reiterated that safe roads are a priority, with sustained drives planned to make Uttar Pradesh’s highways accident-free. Drivers are urged to use holding areas and follow rules for smoother, safer travels.
