Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Boosts Scholarships, Raises Internship Stipend, Extends Free Travel

Lucknow, August 26 — Minister Jaivir Singh addressed reporters on Wednesday, commending recent decisions taken by the Uttar Pradesh government to benefit women, seniors, and the youth.

A key announcement grants women free travel on state buses and trains for a full day before and after Raksha Bandhan, allowing them to move freely for the festivities without fare concerns.

In conjunction with the holiday, the chief minister’s team will hand out a sari and sweets to each woman who attends the district‑wide celebrations, where participants will tie rakhis in a public ceremony.

The second decree provides lifelong free transport to women aged sixty and above, contingent on presenting an identity card. This aims to ensure senior citizens can travel without financial strain.

The third measure deals with elder abuse: if investigations confirm that elderly parents are denied food, housing, or are mistreated, the responsible children may be stripped of any claim on the family’s ancestral property.

On the youth agenda, the cabinet approved an increase in the internship stipend from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 per month, a boost designed to encourage skill development. Additional scholarship policies were also approved to broaden access to higher education for Uttar Pradesh’s young population.
