Upper‑air System Triggers Intense Showers in Tamil Nadu on Monday

Meteorologists have identified an upper‑level air mass that is expected to bring heavy rain to six districts of Tamil Nadu this coming Monday. The most affected locations are the ghat sections of Coimbatore, alongside scattered areas of Nilgiris, Theni, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Kudhallo.

The system is also associated with thunder, lightning and wind bursts that may gust up to 50 km per hour. As a result, local authorities have advised inhabitants of hill towns and open terrains to stay prepared and avoid non‑essential travel.

The phenomenon stems from a cyclonic loop located about 5.8 kilometres above sea level, stretching from the interior of Karnataka across Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal. This configuration enhances the potential for widespread precipitation.

In addition to the six districts, moderate rain is forecast for the Western Ghats, the Cauvery delta region, and the northern coastal strip on Monday. Tuesday is expected to retain similar conditions, with moderate showers persisting across the same zones, though exact amounts will vary locally.

Authorities caution that temporary disruptions—such as power cuts and road blockages—may arise in areas hit by the storm. The public is urged to keep clear of trees during lightning, refrain from seeking shelter near weak structures, and practice electrical safety.

Chennai’s daytime sky will be partially clouded, while the evening may see moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
